Well done, you've made it to your lounger. Been a mad one eh. Not quite switched off? Want some chill time but your head's still in the game? Here’s a halfway house. A series of seven weekly beach reads. Think Marketing Week meets Black Mirror. Entertainment that will actually make you think, and help you return to your desk with a new perspective…
Here’s 1/8. A Neal Stephenson–style techno-cyber romp:
You want speed, slang, systems and swagger. The story follows a sentient brand agent fighting for visibility in the zero-UI battlefield of agentic commerce. Jargon is poetry. Reality is patchy. Nobody shops. Everyone deploys.

Maya initiates her shopping daemon.
Query: “Toner that doesn’t dry me out + 3x loyalty points + free shipping + \<£18 GBP.”
She brushes her teeth.
The daemon slides into the mesh.
It doesn’t search. It negotiates.
Brokers with brand-side agents.
Haggles in markdown.
Sniffs for inventory thresholds.
Spots a discontinuation 43 minutes early and triggers a micro-flash coupon.
It returns with a personalised bundle, a discount stack, and a 12-word explanation.
Maya never sees your ad.
Maya doesn’t care about your story.
Maya doesn’t even see your site.
Because Maya has left the chat.
And your customer?
Your customer is code.
The humans think this is convenient.
The marketers think this is fine.
“We’ll optimise!”
“We’ll build APIs!”
“We’ll get the dev team to make our sitemap machine-readable!”
Sweet.
Except you’re not optimising for a person.
You’re optimising for an intelligence.
One with no sentiment. No nostalgia. No brand affinity.
Just logic trees and vector databases.
If your product data isn’t semantically structured, you’re invisible.
If your offer stack isn’t dynamically accessible, you’re ignored.
If your content doesn’t resolve into machine-readable, modular atoms - you’re 404’d by the future.

Brand-side agent responds.
Flags limited stock. Offers pre-discounted set w/ loyalty points + carbon offset.
Score: 87.6% fit.
Transaction complete.
Agent logs outcome. Begins training on bundle success.
Meanwhile, your CMO is still writing a manifesto.
Meanwhile, your team is building a holiday campaign with six archetypes and a photoshoot budget.
Meanwhile, you’re running AB tests on humans.
But your pipeline?
It’s bots.
And bots don’t care about your vibe.
There is no homepage.
There is no funnel.
There is only the interface layer -
a whisper between machines,
a neural exchange where trust is rendered as schema.
The winners?
Brands with surfaces made of data and intent.
Brands that think like platforms and respond like scripts.
The losers?
Everyone still writing slogans for people who won’t read them.
So what now?
You learn to speak machine.
You invest in ontology.
You teach your product feed to sing in JSON.
You build for zero UI.
Because when agents run the market,
the only thing that matters is what they understand.
And if they don’t see you,
you. don’t. exist.
To be continued…
Put your phone down. Stare up into the blue sky and think about how your brand might exist in a mesh of agentic AI. Or just order a drink. You can always have a chat with The Liberty Guild when you get back. We can help your brand narrative end well...
